Lou Reed - Transformer (1972)

David Bowie has never been shy about acknowledging his influences, and since the boho decadence and sexual ambiguity of the Velvet Underground's music had a major impact on Bowie's work, it was only fitting that as Ziggy Stardust mania was reaching its peak, Bowie would offer Lou Reed some much needed help with his career, which was stuck in neutral after his first solo album came and went. Musically, Reed's work didn't have too much in common with the sonic bombast of the glam scene, but at least it was a place where his eccentricities could find a comfortable home, and on Transformer Bowie and his right-hand man, Mick Ronson, crafted a new sound for Reed that was better fitting (and more commercially astute) than the ambivalent tone of his first solo album. Ronson adds some guitar raunch to "Vicious" and "Hangin' Round" that's a lot flashier than what Reed cranked out with the Velvets, but still honors Lou's strengths in guitar-driven hard rock, while the imaginative arrangements Ronson cooked up for "Perfect Day," "Walk on the Wild Side," and "Goodnight Ladies" blend pop polish with musical thinking just as distinctive as Reed's lyrical conceits. And while Reed occasionally overplays his hand in writing stuff he figured the glam kids wanted ("Make Up" and "I'm So Free" being the most obvious examples), "Perfect Day," "Walk on the Wild Side," and "New York Telephone Conversation" proved he could still write about the demimonde with both perception and respect. The sound and style of Transformer would in many ways define Reed's career in the 1970s, and while it led him into a style that proved to be a dead end, you can't deny that Bowie and Ronson gave their hero a new lease on life — and a solid album in the bargain. I would like to tell you a little story about the the Peddlers that will never be big enough to warrant a national paper write-up but it will prove to you just how cool and versatile this group is. The scene:Thursday afternoon at Radio Lux. The People:Myself and producer Eggy Lay.The Subject:Friday night's programme."Well Dave,we need a big act to give the show a lift.""Right" "We've had Georgie Fame and Anita Harris last week,what do you think"? "How about the Peddlers?" "OK .,we'll try them." The Peddlers came into the show and within five minutes the place was going mad.Roy sitting at the piano and breaking in every five minutes with the opening line of "You're the Reason I'm Living",Tab contributing some thought provoking questions such as "How Cool is Cool" ,and Trevor giving us a blow for blow description of what his hangover was like.,Result: one of the swinging half hours to come out of 208 metres medium wave in a long time.A month after that show went out they released this LP and like the show they did , it is full of life,bounce,and most important, originality.The majority of the tracks are standards ,which make it a good album for family enjoyment,but don't ever make the mistake of saying 'Oh yes , "Girl Talk","Time After Time",and "Smile",I've heard them all before ,because beleive me you haven't. Lets take a couple of examples ."What Now My Love"only involves two people...Roy on vocals and Trevor on percussion.Together they do the whole bit and it's great."Time After Time " is next,this time using the full trio and swinging all the way.On "Girl Talk" they brought in a few friends.Some horn players,string players, brass players,in fact a full orchestra. "Smile" is most likely the biggest surprise on the whole LP .In fact Trevor's 55 second drum solom at the front doesn't give the slighest hint of what is to follow.As for "Who Can I TurnTo" and I'm sure that Newley and Bricusse didn't have this in mind when they wrote it ,and I'm equally as sure that they would dig the Peddlers version as a brilliant addition to their excellent song.As for the others.....Find out for yourself ....[Dave Cash]

M - New York, London, Paris Munich (1979)

Of course, "Pop Muzik" was the only song on M's debut album, New York-London-Paris-Munich, to become a big hit ("Moonlight and Muzak" and "That's the Way the Money Goes" were minor chart entries in the U.K.), but there's actually quite a bit of entertaining music on the record. Granted, the sound of the record is more entertaining than the songwriting, but with its synthesized, danceable beats, big, catchy hooks, and glossy "futuristic" production, it's a terrific new wave artifact. Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons - Chameleon (1972)

Chameleon (1972) was the only Four Seasons long-player released during Frankie Valli and company's brief association with Motown. While Valli's Inside You (1975) was issued on the parent label, this nine-track platter was relegated to the MoWest subsidiary. By the early '70s the original lineup of the Four Seasons had more or less dwindled down to co-founders Valli and Bob Gaudio (keyboards/vocals). As evidenced by the slick pop production values, the audio architects at Motown were treating the Four Seasons like any one of their other assembly-line vocal groups. Even though Valli and Gaudio had been concurrently incorporating the talents of Al Ruzicka (keyboards), Billy DeLoach (guitar), Lee Shapiro (guitar), Clay Gordon (guitar), and Paul Wilson (drums), it was music by committee thanks to Motown's behind the scenes movers and shakers known as the Corporation. Bookending the first part of the effort is the optimistic "A New Beginning," encompassing the funky, upbeat "Sun Country" as well as the sleeper soul classic "The Night." The latter garnered copious spins in the northern U.K. discotheque scene and subsequently became a Top Ten hit for Valli in England. The remainder of the disc vacillates between the musically audacious yet intimately arranged and introspective "When the Morning Comes" and, in stark contrast, the emphatic four-on-the-floor disco predecessor "Touch the Rainchild." Cayenne are great latin-jazz band from the UK, this LP was released in 1987 on Coda Records and features Roy Davies and Terry Disley on keyboards, Robert Greenfield on guitar, Steven Carter on bass, Philip "Buster" Crabbe on drums, John Chambers, Jody Linscott and Marc Fox on percussion, Robin Jones on timbales, Steve Waterman, Steve Dawson and Steve Sidwell on trumpets, Jeff "Bud" Beadle on sax & flute, John Van Derrick on violin and Claudio Allodi on accordion. The album was produced by Roberto Campoverde and recorded in London.
